I come from a long line of wanderers so it is not strange that I go to South Sudan - Now called The Republic of South Sudan - to work at Memorial Christian Hospital. I have been doing this since 2008. The hospital is located in the bush near the village of Werkok. It is northeast of Bor, if you look on a map. People walk, sometimes for days, to get medical care. Dr. Ajak is the Dr. Boss-man. He arrived a week after I did in 2008 and has graciously stayed, keeping the place open and allowing me to continue to visit and work.

I will be returning to South Sudan next month, October, 2011. I am very excited to be on my way back to the land I so love. I miss the people and hardly a day goes by that I don't think of my colleagues and friends. And, as I said in the past, I come from a long line of wanderers and the call to get back wandering is very strong!

I have recently added pictures to my blog. Please go to the beginning of the blog and read forward to see the work that is being done. This puts faces on all the people I have written about. Learn about Gabriel and his family, Dr. Ajak's work and all the Mamas. I will begin writing again as I prepare to go next month. I hope you join me on this adventure.

Fly me to the moon or Nairobi

I feel like I have been in the air forever. All flights went well, just arrived at Mayfield house. Am rooming with Junko (long u) who is a pediatrician resident from LA and will be coming with me to Werkok. This is great, to have a peds doc there. She will be there for 10 days. It is 11pm Nairobi time and I think that is about 3pm your time. My bed is rocking with the feel of the plane. Have to leave here at 6:15 in the AM to catch a plane to Loki then to Werkok. Hope to be there by early afternoon. Have to get some sleep. All is well in Africa. Good night.

A day in the life

Long work day then a fabo dinner with friends. Thanks Susan and Brian. I am pretty much ready, few things in the AM. I keep going over "what should I take to Sudan?" I seem to just have tons of meds and not much else. No gifts for the mama's or the workers. Ahhhh, I want to do it all. My flight is late afternoon and so I can leisurely make my to the airport. I think the next post will be from Sudan or maybe Amsterdam. Thank you all who have supported me

Ok, here goes. I am hoping this whole blog thing works. I leave in 2 days for Werkok, Southern Sudan and thought a blog would help with remembering and sharing some of my adventures. I have a small net book and I believe there is a satellite system in which I can add things each night. No, my bags are not packed. Too much stuff, lots of meds. Ahhh, travel post 9/11. I will get it all there, I am sure. Route is Detroit to Amsterdam to Nairobi to Loki to Werkok. Leave Saturday and arrive Monday. Thanks for all the prayers. C
